Sound Steps CIC uses structured music and DJ education as an evidence-led intervention to improve wellbeing, confidence and life outcomes for children, young people and adults, particularly those with SEND and additional vulnerabilities.
Our approach aligns closely with national frameworks including Every Child Matters, VVU prevention models, and recognised SEND inclusion principles, using creativity as a protective factor.
Research consistently shows that creative, structured activities:
• Improve emotional regulation and confidence
• Increase engagement for neurodivergent learners
• Reduce isolation and vulnerability
• Strengthen resilience and positive identity
• Build trusted adult relationships
Sound Steps translates this evidence into practical, accessible delivery.
Sound Steps supports primary and secondary prevention by:
• Providing positive alternatives to disengagement
• Reducing isolation and low self-esteem, known risk factors for vulnerability
• Building protective factors such as confidence, routine, purpose and community connection
• Creating safe spaces with trusted adults
• Supporting identity, aspiration and long-term goal setting
Creative engagement is recognised by VVU and Youth Endowment Fund evidence as an effective tool for early intervention.

George, known as DJ Blindbeats, is both blind and autistic. Traditional learning environments presented significant barriers to engagement and confidence.
Through Sound Steps’ adapted DJ education model:
• Sessions were delivered in a sensory-aware, structured format
• Learning was broken into clear, achievable steps
• Assistive technology and auditory learning strengths were prioritised
• Pace and communication were adjusted to George’s needs
Outcomes achieved:
• Increased confidence and independence
• Strong engagement and focus
• Development of technical DJ skills
• Improved communication and self-belief
• Progression into performance and public engagement
• Increased social and economic wellbeing.

We adapt environments, delivery and expectations so people can succeed as they are.
Our model:
• Reduces barriers rather than creating them
• Builds strengths rather than highlighting deficits
• Focuses on long-term protective factors
• Delivers measurable outcomes aligned to national frameworks
Sound Steps exists because inclusion works best when creativity leads.
